History of the Averill Park-Sand Lake Fire Department
After a bucket brigade was unable to contain a fire at the Metcalf house on Johnny Cake Lane, several residents of Averill Park and Sand Lake decided that some form of organized fire protection was drastically needed by the village. On July 31, 1900 a meeting was called at The Gabler's Hall (Lakeview Restaurant) in the village of Averill Park to discuss the possibilities of forming a fire department.
On August 4, 1900 at the continuation of the July 31 meeting, a board of nine trustees was elected and a committee of two was named to locate and evaluate all water sources capable of supplying adequate water in the event of a fire. The committee was also called upon to purchase enough suction hose so that wells and cisterns could be used as a water source.
It was decided that the new organization be called the Averill Park & Sand Lake Fire Association: However, on August 11, 1900, a second organization was formed because the founding members by enlarge were too old for active service. So the Averill Park & Sand Lake Volunteer Fire Department was formed with Charted Members.
The original organization was to be continued, but act as a board of directors for the fire company. This group in the later years was to become the Board of Fire Commissioners when the fire company became a fire district.
